The Mount Stewart cygnets are just over a month old. It’s my first time up to visit since they were barely a day old. They’re now about a third the size of their parents and decidedly less cute. Still fluffy, of course, but very much on the way to being swans with their long necks and beaks.
I tempted them over from the middle of the lake with some delicious birdy snacks yesterday morning so I could get a closer look. Most of the little ones are getting quite bold; snatching food from each other and swimming off on their own a good distance from mum and dad. I guess it won’t be long before they’re being driven off the lake by their parents. Imagine if that was how human life worked? Once you’re fully grown your parents tell you to get out of the house and go find your own patch. Nature is harsh.
